I gave this two stars simply because the words were all spelled correctly and there were no glaring grammatical errors. I found this book flat and lifeless. It has a good plot, but there is little detail and very little character development. The book almost reads like cliff notes of a much longer novel. But what really annoyed me where the endless inconsistencies. If there's a massive EMP that causes planes to fall out of the sky (and they would fall almost silently, since their engines would be stalled) then cars wouldn't be working, either. But we see people driving all over the place for the entire book with no stalled traffic clogging up the roads, so it's not like they managed to somehow fix one car. The father's van turns into a truck at some point. Someone dies in one scene, we're told they are seriously injured in the next scene, but then goes back to having been killed instantly in the scene after that. Three people get killed at the same time, but the survivors only bury two of them. One of the characters is an excellent hunter and tracker, there's a fully stocked lake nearby, but everyone is starving. That one really made me laugh because I live fairly close to where this book is set. Deer are everywhere, as are quail, rabbits, squirrels, turkeys, ducks, geese, etc. You name it, it's eating our gardens! We have to be very careful driving in the dark or we run right into them! A good hunter would be WELL fed in this area, even without a lot of ammo. Not only that but at one point someone finds three horses grazing is a field and instead of shooting them for food decides to keep them as pets. I love horses, too, but if I have seven hungry people, including four children, to feed at least one of those critters is going to end up on my table! I finished the book simply because I hate leaving a book unfinished, not because it was worth the time. I saw that the second book in the series is free, too, but I won't be buying it.Product details

After The Event Book 1 of the After The Event Series eBook TA Williams Reviews
I gave this book a 4 only because it could use a good dose of editing. The author fully develops his characters with sensitivity and insight, my guess is that the author is a father himself. I loved the story but did wonder about not revealing the cause of the event, but in a way it made me feel more of what the characters were going through too, after all, they didn't know what caused the event either, they were too busy just struggling to survive. You begin to understand more after reading books two and during book three you understand what caused the event. I only wish the author would make a comment on whether there will be a next book, after each book he leaves you hanging, I am once again hanging, waiting for book four. Which I certainly will buy.
I don't usually write bad reviews, but this book is pretty bad. I didn't get more than halfway through before I gave up. Just a few examples after an EMP, a 747 would not be heard falling to the earth as it doesn't have running jet engines. The main character's van turned into a truck a few chapters into the book. This family of 5, including 4 children, it seems, was able to live off a turkey, a few fish, and well water for weeks to months. (!) I was also surprised that they had a working vehicle and did not encounter any disabled traffic and had relative ease getting out of the city. Sorry, but I just did not like this "story."
This review covers Books 1 - 7. I am led to write it because this series is excellent. The story is believable and the characters become more and more developed as each of them grows older and responds to the very difficult and dangerous world that America has become.
The plot revolves around two brothers and their little sister. The first book opens with the older brother being a teenager, the sister seven-years-old, and the other brother in the middle.
These children find themselves in a world that has collapsed on all levels--no government, food, shelter. T. A. forms these characters throughout the book by the choices they make where the old beliefs and morals no longer seem pertinent and are not pertinent to the rapists, robbers, murderers, and other opportunists who start seizing control of what is left of the U. S.
Both sides of moral dilemmas are constantly arising, giving all the players numerous changes to choose their next act from their inner core.
This can be read by teens and everyone older as well. I read each book without stopping as the siblings live against such a frightening backdrop, I was compelled to faithfully follow them through every circumstance.
Highly readable, nail-chewing scenarios, increasing investment in each character, intense subject matter, and the opportunity to examine my own character--all of these elements and more contribute to this being a series worth reading.
The two cons are the price is high for the short duration of each book and some of them aren't edited well. The pros are the books are engaging, the plot is plausible, the characters are engaging; and it all adds up to good entertainment. Definitely recommend.
Have a good day, everyone.

Wow.... I've read a lot of dystopian and postapoc fiction over the past three decades. I've gotta say, it's been a very long time, and a lot of books ago, that I've become this emotionally invested in a story.
Although fairly short and not getting into the details as to what exactly The Event is, the story of a father fighting for redemption with his family and then having to pick up the mantle of father - leading his family away from that which was familiar into a world turned upside down.... just, wow.
There are moments in which, no matter how much of a manly man I think I am, I could very well have reacted just the same as Grant (the main character). The sheer terror of trying to keep your family safe in a situation that is completely alien by today's standards... I found myself getting pretty worked up at times.
I recommend giving this a read and anxiously await to start reading the second book.
