A psychologist, through letters and narrative, describes his forty-three year journey from war in Vietnam to the present day. How does a returning war veteran re-integrate his life after the moral ambiguity of war, killing, the death of friends, and a naive, disinterested public? Combat trauma, reconciliation, and healing are woven into a story of daily faith.

20th BIRTHDAY 9781490989785 Patrick Stone Books

Pat Stone has given us a compelling memoir of his life as a nineteen year old soldier in Vietnam. Through letter's and his remembrance we see his year at war. A time of constant fear interspersed with his vision of the beauty of the country.

Through his faith shines through, his belief about the power of God in his life and his struggle to remain the moral and ethical man he is.

We see his hopes for his future and a life with the woman he loves. He does not hide hide his fears or inadequacies. He he does his best to be a good leader and keep the men in his group safe but he has failures and loses friends.

He also addresses the challenges a soldier faces when he returns home and how he dealt with them, as well as helped others do the same.

He admits this is his remembrance and others even those in his unit may see it different. I hope perhaps some of his men from Stoney's Swinging Safari read his book.

20th BIRTHDAY 9781490989785 Patrick Stone Books Reviews

A reveling account of what war is like on the front line. Dr Stone portrays his involvement, and the mental anguish both during and after the war, in a very readable fashion. You will not look upon a Veteran of war the same after reading Stone's story. One of those you can not put down, but must read straight through. You will like this book. Thanks to all of our Military for their sacrifice.
I served in the same company as Pat but in the CP platoon. I have read a lot of Viet Nam books but this one is very unique in the way it is written and how well the emotions of being there were captured. Thanks Pat.
I appreciated the opportunity to have an up-close and personal look at the experience of a combat soldier from the Vietnam War. However, I can't help but wish that the editors had proof read the book. The vast number of typo's are truly distracting.
I was in the 4/3rd in 1970 but I was in Alpha Company. I thought the book was great. It gave an accurate portrayal of the day to day trials and tribulations of an infantryman. It also gave insight into the thoughts and fears of a grunt. This book is a good book for grunts and those that care about grunts!
Excellent read based on true life story of a young man's journey from a great home to the personal trials of war in Vietnam. It gave me, a non vet, the first real insight into what our military men experience in combat and the lasting effects on their lives. It also displayed the battle strength given by a strong faith in Jesus Christ and the stress brought by that faith and value of human life on killing even the enemy and particularly the local non combatants caught in the middle. It takes some perseverence to continue through the pre-Vietnam preparative beginning, which is personally intensive.
Very intense, very real. Pat's story is told primarily through letters he wrote home during his tour in Viet Nam. I was unable to read his story through to the end without setting it aside for something "lighter" for a while. The events and emotions were so vividly portrayed that I found myself getting too emotionally involved. That said, I would highly recommend "20th Birthday" to anyone. It made the experiences of our men in Viet Nam very real to me and gave me a new appreciation and understanding for our vets, no matter the war the fought in.
The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because the editing (typos, etc.) is pretty rough and could be a bit distracting at times.
Without a doubt, one of the very best stories I have ever read about a soldier's time in Vietnam. Well thought out and extremely well written. I actually knew the author Pat Stone back when I was a boy growing up in Elkhart, IL. I took piano lessons from his sister Penny when I was 9 years old, and Pat taught me how to shoot a bow. This was about 1965-66 I believe. Great job Pat!
